Banksy's Piranha Artwork Finds Permanent Home at London Museum

Banksy’s renowned piranhas artwork will soon have a permanent public home at the London Museum, set to be displayed when the museum opens its new location in Smithfield next year.

The piece, which transforms a police sentry box into an aquarium filled with piranhas, was originally part of Banksy’s animal-themed street art series that appeared across London in August 2024. Other works in the series featured a rhino perched atop a car, two elephants reaching out with their trunks, and three monkeys swinging on a bridge.

The London Museum secured the piranha-themed piece after the City of London Corporation voted to donate it, ensuring its preservation for public viewing. Museum Director Sharon Ament expressed excitement over the acquisition, stating, “The only thing better than discovering a Banksy on the streets is being able to showcase one inside for all to enjoy.”

Ament highlighted the artist’s unique ability to connect with audiences through his bold and thought-provoking pieces. “Banksy brings art to the people—it appears unexpectedly and captures moments in time. His work resonates with humour, honesty, and energy,” she added.

Previously located at Ludgate Hill, the sentry box was moved to Guildhall Yard after Banksy officially confirmed the piece as his own. It will remain in storage until it takes its permanent place at the London Museum.

The museum’s relocation, backed by a £222 million investment from the City of London Corporation, aims to draw approximately two million visitors annually and create over 1,500 jobs.

“This is a great gift to the people of London,” Ament remarked, emphasizing the significance of preserving street art in a public institution.

Banksy’s works continue to generate widespread interest, sparking conversations about art, politics, and society. With this latest move, one of his most striking pieces will remain accessible to the public for generations to come.
